{"id":712,"date":"2010-07-02T13:44:20","date_gmt":"2010-07-02T13:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nyonlinerealty.com\/blog\/?p=712"},"modified":"2010-07-02T14:13:51","modified_gmt":"2010-07-02T14:13:51","slug":"va-extends-mortgage-relief-to-veterans-affected-by-gulf-oil-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.nyonlinerealty.com\/?p=712","title":{"rendered":"VA Extends Mortgage Relief to Veterans Affected by Gulf Oil Spill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: Carrie Bay<\/p>\n<div id=\"articleColumn1\">\n<p>The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has joined federal agencies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsnews.com\/articles\/fannie-and-citi-offer-mortgage-relief-to-bp-oil-spill-victims-2010-06-16\" target=\"_blank\">Fannie Mae<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsnews.com\/articles\/freddie-mac-announces-relief-for-gulf-coast-borrowers-affected-by-oil-spill-2010-06-17\" target=\"_blank\">Freddie Mac<\/a> in offering mortgage relief to borrowers who may be impacted by the BP oil spill still ravaging the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>The VA recently <a href=\"http:\/\/homeloans.va.gov\/circulars\/26_10_8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">issued a notice<\/a> to servicers of VA-guaranteed home loans instructing them to \u201cextend every possible forbearance to veterans experiencing difficulties\u201d because of the oil spill crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation in the Gulf of Mexico is a widespread disaster caused by human actions and is continuing to<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"articleColumn2\">\n<p>directly impact significant areas of the Southeastern United States,\u201d the VA said. \u201cSome predictions indicate many more areas could be directly affected as the oil continues to spill, while the impact of the crisis may indirectly affect borrowers throughout the country, especially those with commercial ties to the Gulf States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal agency says borrower counseling will help servicers determine whether a homeowner\u2019s difficulties are directly or indirectly related to the crisis, or whether they stem from other reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The VA is instructing servicers to consider a borrower\u2019s payment history and the age of the loan in their evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>The agency says forbearance should be extended \u201cfor those borrowers with excellent records who are suddenly in distress due to the crisis.
